distributes, markets and merchandises animated content for children and families worldwide. DIC is a fully-integrated, one-stop organization with dedicated development, production, domestic and international marketing, consumer products licensing and home entertainment departments.
DIC has distinguished itself by building one of the largest libraries of U.S. animation containing over 3,000 half-hours of programming. The company's prolific library includes some of the most recognizable children's brands in the world, including Sabrina, Inspector Gadget, Madeline, Strawberry Shortcake, Knights of the Zodiac, Liberty's Kids, Speed Racer, Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?, Dennis the Menace, Super Mario Bros., Sonic the Hedgehog, The Wizard of Oz and Evolution.
DIC series have appeared on virtually every broadcast network and cable channel that airs programming for kids and families, including ABC, ABC Family, CBS, NBC, FOX, WB, UPN, HBO, Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel. DIC's programs are watched by approximately 25 million children each week in the U.S. alone. The company recently launched DIC Kid's Network, a unique syndicated programming block designed to meet core FCC requirements, and the only network for kids that reaches effectively 100% of U.S. households on over 450 stations, airing in every DMA across the country. Additionally, DIC distributes more than 100 different series to international broadcasters, reaching over 150 countries worldwide.
DIC's development activities range from creating original characters, such as its flagship property, Inspector Gadget, to acquiring the rights to trend-setting properties from other media, such as Strawberry Shortcake, Sabrina , Knights of the Zodiac and Sonic the Hedgehog, and then translating them into successful television, video and consumer product brands. Additionally, the company acquired the popular lifestyle brand franchise, Mommy & Me, which incorporates a line of books, videos, music and infant consumer products.
In the production arena, DIC is increasing its co-production activities, having developed a number of successful projects with international broadcasters, including TF1, M6, Super RTL, ITV, Televisa, Mediaset and RAI. In addition to Inspector Gadget, Stan Lee's Phantom 5, Knights of the Zodiac and Strawberry Shortcake, DIC, in conjunction with Les Studios Tex and TF1, has produced Sabrina's Secret Life, a new series based on the original comic book Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
DIC Entertainment was founded in Paris in 1971 and was acquired by Andy Heyward in 1986. DIC was later acquired by ABC/CapCities in 1993 and became a subsidiary of the Walt Disney Company in 1995. In November 2000, Heyward, along with Bain Capital, purchased DIC back from Disney.
